I would like to begin by wishing all of you at the Museums and Monuments Board a Happy 60th anniversary. Exactly sixty years today, on the eve of independence, Princess Marina of Kent, representing the British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, formally opened the National Museum. Congratulations!
This is a wonderful day in the life of this great institution. So much of the modern history of our country is bound up in the history of this place, and it is appropriate that we celebrate, in a grand style, the 90th anniversary of its birth.
We are met here, today, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of our nation’s independence, to celebrate our freedom from the clutches of British imperialism, to celebrate the final achievement of the struggle of successive generations of Ghanaian patriots to establish a free, sovereign Ghana. We are grateful that, on such a happy day, leaders and representatives of our neighbouring countries and friendly nations have, in acts of warm solidarity, joined us in our celebration. Akwaaba, Your Excellencies, to each one of you.
